FAO workshop on "Conservation and sustainable use of apricot genetic resources"

Makaryan, representatives from scientific institutions , different organizations, AgSMCs, farmers, other stakeholders.   The UN FAO was represented by: Assistant FAO Representative in Armenia G. Nasoyan, Plant Production and Protection Officer (REU) A. Nersisyan, Project National Consultant H. Hovhannisyan, International Consultant Daniele Bassi.   The Deputy Minister R. Makaryan welcomed the participants and the guests and presented the importance and relevance of the project for Armenia and particularly for people engaged in apricot genetic resources investigation, apricot breeding and cultivation. He hoped that productive discussions would result in providing answers to all questions.   A. Nersisyan, H. Hovhannisyan and D. Bassi presented the current status and policies in apricot PGR in the country, the importance of implementation of medium and long-term programs on apricot genetic resources selection, characterization, conservation and uses; international practice and other relevant issues.   At the end of the workshop the results were summarized, proposals were made especially regarding the sustainability of the project, expansion of the apricot collection orchard and its maintenance.   - See more at: www.un.am/en/news/34

The UN FAO was represented by: Assistant FAO Representative in Armenia Gayane Nasoyan, and Mr Hovik Hovhannisyan.

RA Minister of Agriculture H.E. Sergo Karapetyan presented the importance of the project for the agriculture of Armenia. He mentioned that besides collecting and conserving the apricots genetic resources the project implementation will foster and strengthen the sustainable basis of the fruit production in the country.    

The Minister also emphasized that the collection orchard will be open to all scientists, researchers, as well as producers. Application of new agricultural technology will be widely presented in demonstration orchards, and trainings will be organized for farmers.

“Finally the production of our national pride - apricot, will be set on strong grounds, increasing the farmers\' incomes, and will also create sustainable bases for the implementation of future selection activities”, mentioned the Minister.

It is proposed to include the collection orchard in the list of state protected areas of Armenia.
