PRESENT AND PREVIOUS POSITIONS

Presently director or research and professor of public nutrition at The Akerhus University College.
Deputy Director in the Department of Food Production and Plant and Animal, Ministry of Agriculture from 1998 to 2000. The main goal of the Department was to ensure the consumers healthy, high quality products. The goal embraced not only the final product, but also the entire process from land and sea to the table. The Department emphasised both the nutritional adequacy of the food supply, the food safety and the consumer interests, all factors considered integrated elements of Food Security. Was head of delegation to several of the meetings in fora such as Committee of Food Security, COAG, and ACC/Sub Committee on Nutrition.

 

CONSULTANCIES AND ADVISORY ASSIGNMENTS

From 1980 till present: Various consultancies and special adviser assignments to the Royal Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Norwegian representative in the UN SCN and FAO Committee on Food Security; International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), Rome; the World Health Organisation, Geneva and Copenhagen (Regional Office for Europe, member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Nutrition (1992-1993, extended until 1997); member, Norwegian National Nutrition Council (1988-1999); Member of the Norwegian National FAO Commi­ttee (1989-2000). Now member of Norwegian Delegations to multilateral agencies where food, nutrition and health are discussed.

 

MAJOR RESEARCH EXPERIENCES

1980 - 96: Researcher in the Collaborative Research Project in Sri Lanka "Introducing Nutritional Considerations into Agricultural and Rural Development Programs?; several field periods, including 8 months continuous residence. Project leader (from 1987) and principle researcher of the Norwegian collaborative research program in Mali: Programme SSE-Mali/Norvege. "Environnement et Développement - Volet Sécurité Alimentaire, Nutrition, Femmes. Frequent longer and shorter field periods every year.
1988 - 1998: Head of WHO Collaborating Center for Advanced Training in Nutrition at the University of Oslo.
1985 and 1993-96: Project leader and principle researcher of the project 'Diet, health and risk for coronary heart diseases on off-shore Installations in the North Sea'.
1987 - 96: Project leader of the Norwegian collaborative research programme with the University of Zimbabwe: ?Food and nutrition insecurity in Zimbabwe. The case of vitamin-A deficiency and anaemia?. The program is in an initial phase of planning and funding.
1997 - 1998: Urban challenges to nutrition security: Food security, health, and care in the cities. A collaborative program with International Food Policy Research Institute, Washington, D.C. and CARE International, Atlanta, USA.
1997 - :  Project leader and principle researcher of the Norwegian collaborative research program in Mali: Nutrition and Community Development in Bafoulabe.
2000 - :  Head of the Centre for Research on Health, Society and Environment, Akershus University College, Norway.
2001 - : Leader of a collaborative research project with Oslo Municipality: Nutrition and drug abuse. How to improve the health status and reduce mortality through improved nutrition security?
2002 - : Co-leader of the International Project on the Right to Food in Development (IPRFD), together with Asbjorn Eide, National Centre for Human Rights, and Wenche Barth Eide, Institute for Nutrition Research, University of Oslo.

 

TEACHING AND EDUCATIONAL PLANNING EXPERIENCE

Has since 1979 been teaching courses in Basic Nutrition, Public and Community Nutrition and International Nutrition at graduate and post-graduate level including at other faculties, and at vocational schools, and at in-service training schemes for development workers, community nutritionists, cooks and other catering personnel, nurses, prison employees. The training has mostly been problem-oriented and learning methodologies have been seminars, workshops, group work, small field studies, role-play, and individual project work. Supervise graduate students on term papers, post-graduate and PhD-students in thesis work in community nutrition.
Has conducted a number of curriculum development/teacher training/and educational planning workshops: Nordic School of Nutrition, University of Oslo (1984, 1985); Uppsala University, Sweden (1983, 1986); University of Zimbabwe (1987, 1995); National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad, India (1985); University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka (1985), Tribhuvan University, Nepal (2001); and for WHO on training workshop for nutrition personnel in problem analysis, planning and management of nutrition related activities in Norway, Hungary, Yugoslavia, University of Sydney, at international conferences and congresses.
